How do I upload files via text message?

Updated over 4 months ago

You can upload images, documents, and videos directly to your Loophole account by texting them to Loophole. Files appear in your account within seconds - no need to open a browser or log in.

Important: Files uploaded via text message do not preserve EXIF data (location, date taken, camera info, device information, etc.). If you need this metadata preserved and included in your file, you must upload manually from the website.

Note: This number is exclusively for file uploads. Text messages without file attachments (such as questions, replies, or general messages) will not receive a response and will be automatically deleted. For support or questions, contact us at [email protected] or use the Help button.

How to upload via text message

1. Get the Loophole file upload phone number

Go to your Files page and click the dropdown arrow next to "Upload Files", then select "Upload via Text Message" to see the file upload phone number.

Tip: Save this number so it's easy for you to send uploads in the future.

2. Send your file(s)

From your registered phone number, send a text message with your file(s) attached. You can send:

  • A single file

  • Multiple files (up to 10 in one message)

  • Files with or without a text message

3. File appears in your account

Your file uploads automatically and appears in your Files list within 15 seconds (typically) or up to 1 minute depending on network conditions.

4. AI processing begins

Just like website uploads, Loophole AI analyzes your file in the background:

  • Images get descriptive titles and detailed descriptions

  • Documents get text extraction (OCR)

  • Videos get transcribed and summarized

What happens during upload?

Automatic file naming

  • Single file: Named "Mobile Upload"

  • Multiple files: Named "Mobile Upload 1 of 3", "Mobile Upload 2 of 3", etc.

Your text message becomes the file note

If you include text with your file, it's saved as the file note:

  • Single file: Your text is saved as-is

  • Multiple files: Each file gets your text with numbering added (ex: "Contract photos (1 of 3)")

Secure upload

  • Files are stored in encrypted cloud storage (AWS S3)

  • All activity is logged to your account

  • Only you can access your files

What happens after upload?

Thumbnail appears immediately

Shows within a few seconds of upload completion.

Loophole AI analyzes the file

  • Generates a descriptive title based on content

  • Creates a detailed description of what's shown

  • Extracts any visible text (OCR for images/documents)

  • Transcribes audio (for videos)

  • Categorizes by content type

All standard file features available

  • Add notes, rename it, associate with a business

  • Download original file

  • All activity logged

CRITICAL: EXIF Data Limitation

Text message uploads do NOT preserve EXIF metadata. This includes:

  • Location data (GPS coordinates, where photo was taken)

  • Date and time (when photo was originally taken)

  • Camera information (device model, camera settings)

  • Photo orientation (may affect how image displays)

  • Other technical metadata (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc.)

When EXIF data matters

If you need location data, timestamps, or camera information preserved - for example, for evidence documentation, insurance claims, or timestamp verification - you must upload manually from the website instead of texting.

Website uploads preserve everything

When you upload from your Files page on the website, all EXIF data is preserved and processed by our AI system.

Supported file types

Text message uploads support the same file types as website uploads, including:

  • Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC/HEIF

  • Documents: PDF, DOCX, DOC

  • Videos: MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, MKV

  • Audio: MP3, WAV, AAC

Note: File size limits depend on your mobile carrier's MMS restrictions. If you can send it via text, we can process it.

Requirements and limitations

Must text from your registered phone number

  • Your phone number must be on file in your Loophole account

  • If you text from an unregistered number, the upload will be rejected

  • Files are automatically associated with the account matching your phone number

Upload limit: 20 files per 24 hours

You can upload a maximum of 20 files via text message in any 24-hour period. This is a rolling limit based on when each file was uploaded.

How the rolling limit works:

  • Each file "expires" from the count exactly 24 hours after you uploaded it

  • Example: If you upload 15 files at 1:00 PM today and 5 files at 5:00 PM today (total: 20, limit reached):

    • At 1:00 PM tomorrow, those first 15 files drop off - you can upload 15 more

    • At 5:00 PM tomorrow, those last 5 files drop off - you can upload 5 more

Batch uploads are all-or-nothing

  • If you text multiple files at once, they count as a batch

  • If the batch would exceed your remaining limit, none of the files will upload and you will see a note in your activity logs.

  • Example: If you're at 15/20 files and text 6 files at once, all 6 will be rejected (since 15 + 6 = 21, which exceeds the limit)

  • To avoid rejection, text files individually or in smaller batches that fit within your remaining limit

If you reach the limit:

  • Additional files texted within the 24-hour window will be rejected

  • You can still upload unlimited files from the website

  • The limit only applies to text message uploads, not website uploads

For higher volume uploads, use the Files page on the website instead.

Active accounts only

Text message uploads require an Active account status:

  • Waitlist: Cannot upload via text

  • Pending: Cannot upload via text

  • Active: ✓ Can upload via text

  • Frozen: Cannot upload via text

All uploads are account-level

Files uploaded via text message are always stored at the account level - you cannot associate them with a specific business during upload. You can manually associate them with a business after upload by editing the file.

Processing time

  • Files typically appear in your account within 10 seconds

  • Can take up to 1 minute depending on network conditions

  • AI processing takes an additional 10 seconds to 2 minutes (same as website uploads)

Storage

Text message uploads count toward your storage plan:

  • Saved at full quality (no compression beyond carrier MMS limits)

  • File size depends on carrier compression

  • Counts toward monthly storage limit

Troubleshooting

File didn't appear in my account

  • Ensure you texted from your registered phone number

  • Verify your account status is 'Active'

  • Wait up to 1 minute for upload to complete

  • Check your phone number is correctly stored in your account settings

  • Refresh your Files page

"Processing Failed" message

Our system will automatically retry AI processing every 5 minutes. You don't need to stay on the page. If the issue persists for more than 24 hours, contact support.

Need to change my registered phone number

Update your phone number in your account settings. Only the registered phone number can upload files via text message.

Security and privacy

Why must I text from my registered number?

This security measure ensures only you can upload files to your account. Unregistered numbers are automatically rejected - we don't process or store files from unknown numbers.

Can others see my uploaded files?

No. Files uploaded via text message are private to your account, just like website uploads. Only you (and account administrators) can access them.

What if I text by accident?

If you accidentally send a file, simply delete it from your Files page immediately. It's permanently removed from our systems.

  • Files where EXIF data doesn't matter

  • Casual documentation

NOT recommended for:

  • Evidence that needs location verification

  • Photos where timestamp metadata is critical

  • Large files (use website for >5MB)

  • When you need to preserve camera information
